Tallest flowers in town

WINNERS of a tallest sunflower competition were presented with their prizes at a special ceremony last week.

Schools, pre-schools and children in Gravesend entered the competition organised by Gravesham council.

The prizes were awarded to the winners by the Mayor of Gravesham, Councillor Ken Jones at a presentation at Millbrook Garden Centre on September 29.

First place went to Eleanor Foulds, with her impressive 353cm sunflower.

Second place was awarded to Alice Lean with her 325cm sunflower, and third place to Brittany Birkett with a 315cm sunflower.

In the schools category Shears Green Primary School came away with first prize with its 330cm sunflower.

A spokesperson for Gravesham Council said: "This is the first time that we have run the competition, but we hope to do it again as it was a big success."

All winners received a certificate and Millbrook Garden Centre vouchers.

Eleanor Foulds also received a set of junior gardening tools for scooping first place.
